Frost susceptibility of Nordic metal mine tailings

چکیده

The mining industry produces significant amounts of waste materials, with the greatest volumes generated during enrichment. These materials or by-products, tailings, may be used as alternative civil engineering reducing need for natural resources. In cold climates, frost behaviour is one critical functional requirement in applications. tailings classified sand, silty sandy clayey silt (EN ISO), from four metal mines located northern Finland and Sweden, was evaluated this study using basic laboratory characterisation one-dimensional freezing tests. results were compared existing guidelines on estimating susceptibility soils. Based grain size distribution, samples characterised non-susceptible frost-susceptible. Capillary rise values indicated that ranged negligible to strong. heave test, measured after 96 h 0.1–23.1 mm calculated segregation potential (SP) 0–9.7 2 /Kh. low finest (L1−L3) majority amount frost-susceptible material. coarser (K1-K3 AK1) sand non-susceptible, <1.0 (after h). Thus, behaved like soils, indicating classification methods developed soils are valid evaluation mine tailings. However, influence added reagents should considered, standardised developed. • Mining can contribute material efficiency circular economy. Tailings' use climate requires testing. tested seem well suited materials. Standardised testing approach lacks. A framework suggested estimation.

Preventing acid mine drainage from mine tailings

Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. Portugal was a prosper tungsten producer from the beginning of the XX century, having its apogee during World War II. Nowadays there are mill...

Analysis of transgenic Indian mustard plants for phytoremediation of metal-contaminated mine tailings.

Transgenic Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] plants overproducing the enzymes gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) were shown previously to have increased levels of the metal-binding thiol peptides phytochelatins and glutathione, and enhanced Cd tolerance and accumulation. Furthermore, transgenic Indian mustard plants overexpressing adenosine triphos...

Leachability of Arsenic and Heavy Metals from Mine Tailings of Abandoned Metal Mines

Mine tailings from an abandoned metal mine in Korea contained high concentrations of arsenic (As) and heavy metals [e.g., As: 67,336, Fe: 137,180, Cu: 764, Pb: 3,572, and Zn: 12,420 (mg/kg)]. US EPA method 6010 was an effective method for analyzing total arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. Arsenic in the mine tailings showed a high residual fraction of 89% by a sequential extraction. In To...

Acidification of lead/zinc mine tailings and its effect on heavy metal mobility.

The acid-forming potential of lead/zinc (Pb/Zn) mine tailings at Lechang City of Guangdong Province was studied using both net acid generation (NAG) and acid-base accounting (ABA) methods. The pyritic and total sulfur contents of the tailings were 12.6% and 18.7%, respectively. The mean acid neutralization capacity (ANC) was 63.5 kg H2SO4/t while three oxidized tailings samples had an ANC less ...

Toxic metal(loid) speciation during weathering of iron sulfide mine tailings under semi-arid climate

Toxic metalliferous mine-tailings pose a significant health risk to ecosystems and neighboring communities from wind and water dispersion of particulates containing high concentrations of toxic metal(loid)s (e.g., Pb, As, Zn). Tailings are particularly vulnerable to erosion before vegetative cover can be reestablished, i.e., decades or longer in semi-arid environments without intervention. Meta...
